Golf Advisor: Top Courses in Ohio (2022 #2)
Reviews
Great Layout & Value in Toledo
I'm partial to Arthur Hills designs, and Maumee Bay is no exception. Played in June 2023 - which was my 3rd time playing it (once a long time ago in high school, and then last year and this year). The course rates are super reasonable - Paid $40 for 18/cart on Father's Day. Since it's owned by the Parks Department I assume that's what helps keep the cost reasonable.
This isn't the BEST layout of the Arthur Hills courses in the area, but it is still a really good one. With the wind blowing you have to hit good shots to be able to score, and some of the holes play super long if into the wind.
There is a good amount of water that comes into play, and also some of the long native grasses - although it is possible to find your ball in it, as it's fairly wispy.
Some of the really good holes are #3, 5, 6, 14, & 15. Toughest hole is either 12 or 14. If 12 plays into the wind it is an absolute bear of a Par 4.
Course was in great shape. Greens weren't crazy fast, but had a good pace, and were firm. Like most Arthur Hills courses, there's opportunities to play the ball close to the ground and run it up to undulated greens. There's lots of sand traps out there, and some were maintained better than others - many of the fairway bunkers didn't have rakes in them, but greenside bunkers did.
The course itself is within the State Park/Resort, so there's lots of other things to do that are family friendly.
All in all - this is a must play in the NW Ohio/Toledo area. Great layout, well kept, and a great price!
Hidden Gem in NW Ohio
I played this for the first time and was blown away by how much fun I had on the course. Great layout with a variety of holes that want to make you keep playing. Highly recommend!
Course Is Just Meh
I have played this course more than I would like to admit. MB is usually in good condition. Pace of play is hit or miss and just depends when you play it. My problem with the course is that I have played it as much as I have and remember one or two holes at best. Usually I will remember then entire course when finished. It occupies some of the flattest land possible which obviously contributes to the 'this hole looks just like the last . . .'
For your money, there are more memorable courses in the area at a similar price point and in the same condition.
Great course that poses its challenges
Maumee Bay certainly has its resort-style feel. It is a true links styled course with tall fescue guiding the fairways. The perfect difficulty of course for beginner/intermediate golfers.
Tee boxes are well maintained and there are plenty off distance between different tees. Fairways are pretty open but quite deceiving as there's always a chance you can end up in the fescue.
There are several resort homes on the golf course which truly give it that resort-style feel. The wind poses the biggest challenge to this course as a good gust can stop the ball from carrying an extra 30-40 yards.
The biggest downfall is the amount of geese poop around and on the greens. The course is filled with geese and can get annoying at times,
Overall, a very fun course and would love to play again.
Hot day on the links
Fun links style golf course. It was a 90° day when we played so without trees and made it pretty tough with no shade. Course can be rather bland as a lot of the holes are appear to be similar, lacks a little bit of character. Great maintenance, course in good shape, greens roll true. Will definitely play again.
Great Course
Amazing course! One of the few true links style course you can find in the area. The course was in great shape, excellent fairways and the greens rolled true and fast. Easily my top public course in the area.
Great Links Style Course
1st time playing this course, it was really nice links course, generous landing zones, i only missed 2 fairways out of the 14 i hit driver on, most holes were straight away, but stay in fairway off the tee or you may be hitting out of some high grass and or get a penalty from going in the water, pars 3's very challenging and long, putting was fast with a few greens where you could get some 30 foot putts if you are on the wrong level of the green, all in all, very fun to play
Rude
The person at the counter was very rude spilling out the rules of play..use cart path, park far away from greens etc..etc..etc. having us think the course was going to be plush. well it wasn't.For the price there's better courses in the area, Eagles Landing, Chippewa,
to name a couple that are in equal condition or better.
and not has expensive.
Excellent Condition, Fairly good layout
This is as good of a links course as you will get out of Northwest Ohio. Granted I only played the front nine, but this is a shot shaping course. With fescue in play on every hole and water on a majority, you will be punished for errant shots. Despite this, the landing areas off of the tees are fairly generous. Beware though, as the landing areas are typically risk/reward as they are littered with fairway bunkers. Greens rolled true and were faster than I expected. I can't speak for the back 9, but the front is relatively flat for a links course. Even so, the combination of fescue, water, and sand will make you think twice on what club to hit. I will definitely play here again as it is worth the drive in the Toledo area.
True Links Course
Played this course three consecutive days with the wind blowing every day. The wind made this course so much more difficult. Had 2 foursomes play in our weekend get together with some very good golfers among them. It was humbling to have to hit Driver on some Par 3's due to wind. Course layout was great and fairways were perfect. Greens looked fast but rolled slow. not much break in any putts. Overall this was a great weekend of golf with staying at a cabin that was located near the 7th hole green. Great place to stay and play with the amenities at the State lodge.
Great layout
I love the layout but please do something with your greens. Such a great course but those greens are borderline unplayable. This course is too nice to have super slow bump greens. I prefer med shag as carpet not my greens. All in all the layout is fantastic. Larger fairways but also tall fescue everywhere if you are errant off the tee. Would play here more often if the greens got rolled and cut faster.
This course offers a challenge to all golfers!
Amazing links style golf course that can offer more than a challenge with the winds coming off Lake Erie! It's a must play golf course!
Wind on the Links
The course was in early spring condition so the greens were still a little bumpy. The wind was blowing hard and created quite a challenge from the Blue tees. For the money we paid with a Hot deal the value was fantastic. I would like to play there again later in the year.
Challenging but fun course
Very fun course but can be difficult. It was super windy when we played so made the course even tougher. The back 9 is the toughest by far with water in play along many fairways and near greens. I like the challenge, if you can play well here, you can play well anywhere. My only complaint is with the planning of the course. It is right on Lake Erie and yet there are no views of the lake. The designers of Maumee Bay State Park were obviously not golfers. Overall a challenging fun links style course..
Arthur Hills at its finest
This may be my favorite Arthur Hills course . It was at the end of the season yet it played well. I would need to play it mid season to evaluate the greens. Nevertheless , it is a great layout.
Wind and Heather
Course was immaculate. Great shape and extremely well laid out. But the wind made the course largely unplayable. The links style course allowed the wind to just plummeting through the course. 150 yd, par three, hitting a 5 iron, still falling 30 yrds short. it was a tough day.
One of the best in the area
A great test, especially if it windy. Always green and in good shape. It's definitely one of the longer (public) course around Toledo. Straight tee shots are a must, but there is a first cut of rough before the long, native grass. The greens aren't super quick but run very true.
