Rediscover Donald Ross at the public Hawthorne Valley Golf Club near Cleveland
Established in 1926, Hawthorne Valley Golf Club is a living, breathing museum of golf southeast of Cleveland. If he were alive today, golf's grandmaster Donald Ross would probably be proud at how well his 6,533-yard course has survived the passage of time. The once-private Hawthorne Valley turned public in 2010, inviting a whole new generation of players to cherish its classic design.

Elevated tees and greens highlight Manakiki Golf Course, a Donald Ross design 17 miles northeast of downtown Cleveland. Shot for shot, the 6,641-yard course might be just as good as Sleepy Hollow Golf Course, widely considered the gem of the eight courses owned and operated by the Cleveland Metroparks. It's a timeless treasure well worth the pint-sized greens fees the Metroparks charges to play.

Sleepy Hollow Golf Course is the gem of the eight courses of the Cleveland Metroparks system. Golfweek rated it no. 15 among the nation's top municipal courses and no. 2 among the "Best Courses You Can Play" in Ohio in 2013. Few players will shoot their handicap on this tough track, but they'll always have fun trying, Jason Scott Deegan writes.

Little Mountain Country Club sits adjacent to Interstate 90, but golfers would never know it because the trees and hilly landscape block out the traffic noise, setting up a peaceful round of golf about 30 miles northeast of Cleveland in Concord. There's a lot to like about Little Mountain Country Club, Jason Deegan Scott writes.

Life as a sports fan in northern Ohio has been tough over the years. Cleveland has waited longer than any other city with at least three major sports franchises to win a title. The lone bright spot in the region's sports scene has to be golf. The greater Cleveland area offers some of the state's finest public courses, especially within its value-laden Metropark system.

First impressions don't give a true indication of how good Westchester Golf Course is. What it lacks in facilities, it makes up for with what's outside: a fine, 7,120-yard track that rates among the best bargains in central Ohio. But even with six lakes and more than 75 bunkers as obstacles, a career round is possible.

The Macke family is one of the most prominent in Cincinnati's golf scene, and the game runs thick in the family genes. In 1969, Macke's father, Robert, designed Hillview Golf Course in Cleves, a 5,435-yard course still owned and operated by the family business, Macke Golf. All four of Robert Macke's boys -- Drew, Paul, Joe and Mike -- are certified superintendents.

Cumberland Trail Golf Club features greens that are among the best in central Ohio. But unless you're a high roller used to putting country-club greens that rev up to 12 or more on the Stimpmeter, it will take some time to get used to Cumberland Trail's slick surfaces, Jason Scott Deegan writes.
